about

Written by John D. Loudermilk.

Although it was made famous by Norah Jones much later, I first heard this song sung by Nina Simone. It’s a deep cut on her record Silk and Soul. Possibly more than any other song on this collection, it feels the most indulgent for me. Nina Simone’s version is so complete – classy and concise in it’s assertive desperation, and the stunning arrangement is so full of air and sexy swagger. My rendition is kind of claustrophobic and small. It probably doesn’t need to exist, but it puts a new spin on the sentiment and that’s one of the things music is good for.
